Elon Musk advocates ‘free trade zone’ between US and Europe
The European Union is planning to impose tariffs on US goods after the Donald Trump administration imposed additional tariffs. Meanwhile, Trump’s advisor Elon Musk has called for the creation of a tariff-free free trade area between the US and Europe.
Elon Musk expressed this position while joining a video conference organized by the far-right League party in Florence, Italy, on Saturday. He also expressed his position in favor of removing trade barriers between the US and Europe. Musk expressed this position a few days after Trump announced retaliatory tariffs on goods imported into the US from various countries around the world. According to Trump’s announcement on April 2, 20 percent tariffs have been imposed on European Union (EU) countries, including Italy. Italy is one of the countries with which the EU has a trade surplus with the US.
Elon Musk said at the Florence conference that both Europe and the US should move towards a tariff-free status to create the right situation. This would create an effective free trade area between Europe and North America.
Musk also agreed to greater freedom of movement between the two regions during his talks with League party leader Matteo Salvini. Musk said he had conveyed his views to President Trump, saying, “If people want to work in Europe or if they want to work in North America, I think they should be allowed to do that.”
Elon Musk has previously expressed support for right-wing parties in Europe. In addition to Salvini’s League party, he has also spoken out in support of Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni’s Brothers of Italy and the Alternative for Germany (AfD). However, EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic said the country would take “considerate, careful and coordinated” action in response to the US tariffs.
