A ‘mob’ formed and beat up a student federation worker, calling him a Chhatra League member.
Bangladesh Chhatra Federation’s Chittagong Metropolitan Organiser Shawkat Osman was beaten up by a ‘mob’ (group disorder) calling him Chhatra League. The incident took place around 3:30 pm on Wednesday in the area adjacent to Mimi Super Market in Panchlaish Police Station in Chittagong City.
Eyewitnesses and police sources said that Shawkat Osman was returning home after tutoring. At that time, Mirza Faruk, the member secretary of the city’s Omar Gani MES College branch Chhatra Dal, and some others gathered people calling him Chhatra League. They beat up Shawkat. Meanwhile, after receiving a call from the police emergency service 999, the Panchlaish Police Station-Police arrived at the scene, rescued Shawkat and brought him to the police station. He was later released. Former general secretary of the Bangladesh Students Federation Chittagong Metropolitan Branch and current political education secretary of the central executive committee, Shridham Shil, told Prothom Alo that MES College Chhatra Dal leader Mirza Faruk and his associates were involved in the incident. A case has been filed against them at the police station.

Officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station Mohammad Solaiman told Prothom Alo that a case has been filed against Mirza Faruk and two others at the police station. The police are trying to arrest the people involved.
