Actress Shomi Kaiser granted bail

The High Court on Wednesday granted bail to actress and former president of the E-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (E-CAB) Shomi Kaiser in an attempt-to-murder case. A High Court bench comprising Justice Abu Taher Mohammad Saifur Rahman and Justice Mohammad Shawkat Ali Chowdhury passed the order. Barrister Hamidul Misbah appeared for Shomi Kaiser in the hearing. Deputy Attorney General Zisan Haider and Assistant Attorney General ABM Ibrahim Khalil appeared for the state.

A businessman named Ishtiaq Mahmud was attacked during a protest in July last year. An attempt-to-murder case was filed with Uttara Purba Police Station on September 29 last year.

Shomi Kaiser was arrested on November 5 in this case and a Dhaka court sent her to jail on November 9.

Shomi Kaiser applied for bail in the High Court after being denied bail by the lower court.

After hearing the application, the High Court issued a rule on December 10, granting his interim bail. The state appealed to the Appellate Division to suspend the bail order.

On December 12, the Appellate Division’s Chamber Court suspended his bail.

Later, the rule was sent to a bench headed by Appellate Division Justice Abu Taher Mohammad Saifur Rahman for a hearing. The hearing was held there.
