Boat capsizes in Teknaf: 25
Several people, including at least one BGB member, are missing after a boat carrying Rohingyas capsized off Shahparir Island in Teknaf. A joint rescue operation by the BGB and local fishermen rescued 25 Rohingya men, women and children alive after the accident early Saturday morning. It is initially believed that the accident occurred when the boat’s bottom burst in the Bay of Bengal adjacent to the western shore of Shahparir Island. The missing BGB member was working at the Shahparir Island BGB border outpost.
Teknaf-2 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md. Ashiqur Rahman said that the accident occurred while they were trying to enter Bangladesh illegally by sea. A BGB member who participated in the rescue operation went missing. Although the boat was rescued, none of the missing people could be found. The rescue operation continued until 3 pm.
The rescued Rohingyas said that there were more than 50 passengers on the boat.
