Loud argument, commotion in the office of the Islamic University’s vice-chancellor
A huge brawl and uproar broke out in the office of the Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University in Kushtia between teachers and officials holding various administrative positions, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists, and students of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The incident took place around 1 pm on Tuesday over the appointment of new positions, including the post of registrar, according to university sources.
Meanwhile, several video clips of the brawl have been circulated on social media, Facebook. This has created widespread criticism. It has been alleged that journalists working on the campus were prevented from entering the Vice Chancellor’s office at that time.
University sources have learned that a party led by Vice-Chancellor Eyakub Ali and Chhatra Dal convener Shahed Ahmed is working to appoint a pro-BNP official as registrar. On the other hand, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has demanded that the appointment be made through the administration. This is what has created the ruckus.
According to some teachers and students, Vice Chancellor Naqib Mohammad Nasrullah was holding a meeting with engineers and the Director of Planning and Development Department (PD) in the Vice Chancellor’s meeting room at around 12:30 pm on Tuesday. During the meeting, pro-BNP officials and employees and leaders and activists of the branch Chhatra Dal started a ruckus in front of the office, demanding the removal of fascist accomplices from administrative and official posts. Later, at around 1:15 pm, Vice Chancellor Eyakub Ali came down from the office. After a while, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists led by him, Zia Parishad President Farukuzzaman Khan and General Secretary Rafiqul Islam, Branch Chhatra Dal convener Shahed Ahmed and Member Secretary Masud Rumi entered the Vice Chancellor’s office. A ruckus arose among them over the appointment of a registrar.
When the journalists entered the place, Chhatra Dal convener Shahed Ahmed and other activists threw them out. At one stage, an argument broke out between the vice-chancellor and the provost body in the vice-chancellor’s office. At that time, it was alleged that when the students of the anti-discrimination student movement tried to enter the vice-chancellor’s office, Chhatra Dal activists blocked them. Later, the leaders of the anti-discrimination movement entered the office, ignoring them. There, heated words were exchanged between the coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, Mukhlesur Rahman, and the convener of the branch Chhatra Dal.
Several students who witnessed the incident said that at one stage of the commotion, Vice-Chancellor Eyakub Ali called Proctor Shahinuzzaman a ‘Jamaat’, which led to a heated exchange between the two. There was a huge commotion. In several videos spread on Facebook, the vice-chancellor, vice-chancellor and proctor are seen talking loudly. Some teachers are trying to silence them. They can be heard shouting, “Shut up, shut up.” Someone can also be heard saying “Beyadav” multiple times.
