Mother slaps daughter with hot iron, father beats her

In Taltoli upazila of Barguna, it has been alleged that mother Asma Begum beat her daughter with a hot iron and father Kamruzzaman Sikder beat her severely by tying her to a tree for running away from a madrasa. Locals said that the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in Sawdagarpara village of Barobogi union of the upazila.

The name of the child who was tortured is Lamia (9). She is the daughter of Kamruzzaman Sikder and Asma Begum from Sawdagarpara village of Taltoli upazila. Lamia is a fourth-grade student at Aisha Siddika Madrasa in Taltoli town.

Lamia’s mother Asma Begum said, “My husband often beats my daughter. Today, when he started beating me, I got angry and beat her with a hot iron. This is my injustice.” I didn’t understand that such a situation would happen.’
According to relatives and local sources, Lamia left home on Wednesday morning without informing her madrasa teachers. In the afternoon, the teachers informed her father Kamruzzaman about her escape from the madrasa. Kamruzzaman got angry and tied Lamia to a tree and beat her severely. Later, the child’s mother Asma Begum slashed her daughter with a hot kunti. The child’s body was burnt and injured in various places. Local people rushed to rescue her on hearing Lamia’s screams and took her to the Taltoli Upazila Health Complex.

Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Monirul Islam said that the child’s body had been slashed with a kunti in two places. She was given proper treatment.

Taltoli Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shahjalal said that the girl, who was the victim of the torture, was given treatment and returned to her mother.

Taltoli Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Umme Salma said that all expenses including the child’s treatment have been taken care of. The OC has been instructed to take action against the crime of child abuse. Even if no complaint is received, the child’s parents will be called and warned to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
