Shibir activists protest at police station over news of Tanti League leader’s release

Shibir activists protested at the police station over the news of the release of a Tanti League leader in Sitakunda, Chittagong. The incident took place inside the Sitakunda police station at around 1:45 am on Monday.

The detained leader is Sitakunda Municipality Tanti League General Secretary Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury. He is an accused in the murder case of Shibir’s colleague Md. Shahjahan. The murder took place in 1996 at Sitakunda Degree College. Mejbah was a member of the Chattogram University Chhatra League.

In addition, Shibir activists broadcasted the procession inside the police station live on Facebook at around 1:45 am on Monday from an ID named ‘Bhuiya Panthichila’. It can be seen from the Facebook live that several Shibir activists entered the police station with slogans like ‘Administration’s agents, be careful’, ‘My brother is in the grave, why is the murderer outside’. They entered through the main gate and continued to march inside the police station for a long time. At one point, after receiving the news, the police station OC Mujibur Rahman came to the police station. Then the Shibir activists wanted to know where Mezbah was. The OC said that Mezbah had been arrested. He was in police custody. Then they ended the live.

When asked about the procession, Islami Chhatra Shibir North District Branch President Md. Shawkat told Prothom Alo that the Sitakunda police station and police were releasing Mezbah Uddin, the accused in the murder case of Shibir’s Md. Parvez and Shahjahan, and the leaders and activists went there. Later, when the administration said that they would not release the accused, everyone left.

Sitakunda Police Station Inspector Investigation Md. Alamgir told Prothom Alo that Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury was sent to jail through the court after being shown arrested in a previous murder case.
