US seeks alternative path
The United States is exploring alternative ways to resettle Palestinians from Gaza, President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said in an interview with CBS News on Sunday (March 16). Asked whether the United States was discussing with other countries the resettlement of Palestinians as part of its plan to occupy the Gaza Strip, Witkoff said, “I think we are exploring all options and possibilities to find a better life for the people of Gaza and for the Israelis.”
US seeks alternative path
Last month, President Trump announced that the United States would occupy Gaza and develop the territory into a “Riviera of the Middle East.” According to the plan, the Palestinians would be resettled in neighboring countries such as Jordan and Egypt. However, Trump’s proposal has faced widespread condemnation around the world. In addition to the Palestinians, the plan has been opposed by various countries around the world and Arab states, including Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and other Arab states.
Last week in Qatar, Witkoff and Eric Treasure, the National Security Council’s senior director for Middle East and North Africa, presented a “bridge” proposal that would buy time for negotiations on a permanent ceasefire agreement. The plan includes the disarmament of Hamas, a long-standing Israeli demand. “We have a very reasonable proposal that can serve as a bridge to final negotiations and a solution. Our goal now is to reach a solution that is acceptable to all parties,” Witkoff said.
