Youth stabbed to death at tea shop, accused beaten to death, 6 police injured
A young man was allegedly stabbed to death after entering a tea shop in Bagmara, Rajshahi. Following this incident, angry locals ignored police barricades and caught the accused youth and beat him to death. Six people, including a police sub-inspector, were injured in the attack by the angry people.
The incident took place from Friday afternoon to evening in Ranshibari Bazar in Jhikra, Bagmara Upazila. The name of the young man who was stabbed to death is Abdur Razzak (35). He was a resident of Goalbari village in Atrai upazila of Naogaon, bordering Bagmara. The name of the young man who was beaten to death is Aminul Islam (22). He is also a resident of the same village. Bagmara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhidul Islam told Prothom Alo that he had heard about a person being stabbed to death. Although the incident took place in Bagmara, the deceased’s home is in Goalbari village in Atrai. The young man involved in the murder also lives in the same village. Later, the young man who was being held captive by the police was kidnapped, beaten and crushed to death by hitting his head with a brick. Six people, including a police officer, were injured in the incident. The army’s assistance has been sought to bring the situation under control.
Police and local witnesses said that this afternoon, Abdur Razzak was sitting and drinking tea at Nazrul’s tea shop in Ranshibari Bazar. At around 5:30 pm, Aminul Islam (22) of the same village entered the shop and stabbed Abdur Razzak with a knife. He fell to the ground. After confirming his death, he ran away.
Local people came to know about the matter and chased Aminul. At one stage, he took refuge in Abdur Rashid’s house in Ranshibari village. Angry people surrounded the house. On receiving the information, the Bagmara police reached the spot and tried to rescue him. However, they failed due to the people’s resistance. The people tried to break the door of the house several times to enter. They handed over the accused to them and asked the police to leave.
Police and local residents also said that at one stage, around 7:30 pm, angry people broke the door of the house and entered inside. When they resisted, the angry people insulted and beat up six police members including Sub-Inspector Sadiqul Islam and entered inside. Then, the young man was taken out of the house and beaten to death at one point.
According to local sources, Abdur Razzak is a fish trader. Aminul Islam is known as a scoundrel and drug addict. They have a good relationship. It is alleged that Aminul beat up a woman four days ago. A general diary has been filed in this regard at Atrai Police Station.
